“I hesitantly began a plant-based diet with Dr. Marbas. I really thought I couldn’t give up meat…or especially cheese! I had heard of this concept but I hadn’t made the commitment as it sounded too overwhelming. Wow, was I wrong! It truly is as simple or as difficult as you want to make it but the most important thing, is taking that leap of faith and just doing it. There are so many resources out there, ie: Forks Over Knives and recipes on Pinterest! It quickly becomes a routine and your taste buds truly change so you’re enjoying those foods you once thought normal (hello juicy peach). A new lifestyle that includes a reduction of meds or no meds, more energy, greater quality of life, and prevention or reduction of disease is just incredible! I have FELT a tremendous change! I honestly didn’t realize the physical change as much until I saw my before and after pics. As soon as I started the plant based diet, I had no need for strong pain meds. The inflammation and pain in my back literally vanished. I used to have to take a flexeril AND a tramadol just to clean my house or get through the really bad days. I stopped having mood swings (I only realized this because my husband commented!), my daily afternoon headache was gone, I now have the energy to do way more than just come home after work and crash! I can work all day, go to the gym (no back pain after Zumba!), pick up some groceries, make dinner, get the kids taken care of and tucked in bed, AND have time to hang out with my husband, whew! Who would of thought? It has definitely helped me to envision all the incredible benefits and what my future will be like if I continue on this lifestyle journey. I see myself keeping up with my kids and passing on this gift of nutritional knowledge so that they’ll get the most out of their lives…I see my mother’s doctor taking her off of diabetic medication and her flourishing in health…I see myself coming into retirement in great health, ready to fully enjoy that chapter in my life…there are so many wonderful options versus going back to what life was like before and what the most likely end result for me would be…diabetes/high blood pressure and who knows what else. “I have been overweight all my life. About 10 years ago, after a traumatic life event, I lost about 70 lbs through a low carb fad diet. But it didn’t last and I gained back 100 lbs. All my attempts to diet since then failed, I believe that I messed up my metabolism and mostly resigned myself to being obese and needing to just accept it. Despite being big I was fairly healthy, not on any medications or any health diagnosis. Then I turned 40 and felt like I was just falling apart. I had respitory infections for months on end, I had aches and pains all the time, I was constantly fatigued, and started having intense abdominal pains. When I found out that I had gallstones I started on a plant based whole food diet (no meat or dairy and very low fat) – about mid May 2016, then started the Lifestyle Medicine Program with Dr. Marbas. Right away I noticed a difference, my abdominal pain disappeared. I probably wouldn’t have gone through with having my gallbladder removed, but it had been bad long enough that it was affecting my liver. After having the gallbladder removed I was told I could go back to eating “normal” (fat filled diet). I was warned of side effects and told my body would need to adjust, that food would go right through me for a while. However, I stuck with the plant based whole food diet (no meat or dairy and very low fat) and never experience any of the side effects. I didn’t have the same cravings before that caused me to go off of diets. I was satisfied and not hungry all of the time. It was easy to find good things to eat and I felt like I was strengthening my body with good nutrition rather than denying and starving myself like I had prior with fad diets. By the end of the program with Dr. Marbas, mid August 2016 I had lost 40 lbs. I also lost my fatigue, my abdominal pain, and my daily aches & pains. At first fear of pain returning kept me on the diet, then fear of side effects, and now it isn’t a diet - it is how I live. The first 40 lbs came off easily, even though I didn’t incorporate much exercise while in the program due to going through & recovering from surgery. I may have to work harder at taking off the next 40 to 60 lbs, but that is ok because I feel prepared, I feel educated, I have knowledge and information and feel like I am really healing my body from 40 years of neglect. It is how I live and I am not done living – weight loss is great, but improved quality of life, hope for a strong healthy future, that is what keeps me committed.”
